10 Greatest Tribute Songs In Rock History

8. Edge Of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks

Outside of her work with Fleetwood Mac, there is no song more closely associated with Stevie Nicks than Edge of Seventeen.

The song was originally going to be about musician Tom Petty and his relationship with his wife Jane. They met at the "age of seventeen", which is where the name of this song comes from.

But who should come along and steal their thunder but John Lennon. Way to go and get shot like that, John!

In all seriousness, Nicks was also dealing with the grief she felt in the wake of her uncle's passing as well. These two tragedies led to Stevie penning the lyrics for what would become her signature track.

The "white-winged dove" that takes up much of the focus on this song is symbolic of a human soul leaving the body after death. The singer got this and most of the rest of the song's imagery from the days she spent by her uncle's side in the lead-up to his death.

The magic was slightly ruined when, in 2020, Nicks revealed she'd only recently heard what a dove actually sounded like.

We'll forgive her just this once.
