10 Greatest Tribute Songs In Rock History

7. So Far Away - Avenged Sevenfold

Throughout the noughties, heavy metal five-piece Avenged Sevenfold were picking up some serious momentum. This peaked at the 2006 MTV Music Awards, where they beat the likes of Rihanna and Panic! at the Disco to be named Best New Artist.

Take that, Brendan Urie!

Sadly, the good times would not last for the band as, in late 2009, their drummer James Sullivan was found dead in his home.

Affectionately known as The Rev, Sullivan was just 28 when he died and left a massive hole in the group both literally and figuratively.

A7X carried on and made the decision to immortalise their late friend in song form. So Far Away was written by guitarist Synyster Gates, who had known The Rev since childhood.

This moving ballad actually started out as a tribute for Gates' grandfather, but the music video - which featured fictionalised versions of the band playing together as children - made it very clear who the finished version was for.

A beautiful song for a talent taken far too soon, So Far Away is a fitting tribute to a drummer with all the potential in the world.
