10 Greatest Unsung Heroes In Rock And Roll
5. Peter Grant - Led Zeppelin
In the world of rock and roll, the manager always seems to get a bit of a bad reputation. If you watch almost any rock and roll biopic from the past few years, the manager is always the money hungry guy in the background looking to milk their artist for all they are worth. While there are probably some managers who are looking to feed their greed, Peter Grant loved Led Zeppelin and defended them with an iron hand.
Then again, having a band like Led Zeppelin would have been difficult for anyone to take on, especially given the amount of alcohol John Bonham could consume every single day. From what people close to Zeppelin will tell you though, Peter was the kind of stern businessman who helped bring out the character behind the band, almost making the backstage scene at every show seem like some Mafia meeting.
Almost acting as their PR rep at the same time, Peter also made it a point to build a sort of mystique around Zeppelin from day one, rarely letting them do any in depth interviews and letting the public form their version of what the band was supposed to be in their heads. While there had been bad boys of rock and roll long before Zeppelin, Peter Grant could practically take credit for inventing the kind of excess rock star persona that most of us associate with the genre (for better and for worse).
