10 Grunge Albums That Deserve More Love
1. Hole - Celebrity Skin
Although not as memorable, melodic, shocking or abhorrently attractive as the band's prior effort - Live Through This - follow-up Celebrity Skin was plagued by so many factors, including the media and the public's sudden disdain towards Courtney Love. Alongside the accusations of having a hand in her husband's - alleged - murder and the various antics that ensued shortly after, but putting aside all the tragedy, Celebrity Skin is a masterpiece that deserves to be considered a classic in all regards.
Seen as a contemporarily pop-based album upon its release in 1998 on the back of the death of the grunge wave, rather than aligning with the sound that was synonymous with the band up until that point, the album may incorporate one or two mainstream sounding songs. Such as the group's all time biggest hit in the mainstream in the titular track of the same name as well as the feel-good anthem Malibu.
However, upon closer inspection, the band's core grittiness is still present and resonant, and the multitude of brilliantly written and produced songs that include some fantastic personnel outside the band such as Billy Corgan and Charlotte Caffey, Celebrity Skin is a triumph that, still to this day, is criminally overlooked.
Overlook the controversy and chances are, you'll fall in love with this stellar album.
