10 Grunge Albums That Deserve More Love
8. Alice in Chains - Facelift
Now, it's safe to say that Alice in Chains were never an obscure band, and in the US '90s landscape of music, they absolutely dominated the earlier half of their decade, with their macabre, yet sentimentally vulnerable vocals, riffs and writing standing out amongst the teen angst of other bands at the time.
Nowhere is this more prominent than in their second album, Dirt. However, that doesn't mean that their debut, the one that is the subject of this entry, is anything less than exquisite by any means. In fact, in many instances, it straight up challenges Dirt. From its immense production value, which was unparalleled for an unknown band, all the way to its unapologetic lyrics and almost fantastical thematic elements.
The underrated and understated tracks such as Bleed The Freak, Sea of Sorrow and Sunshine, all of which are some of the bands most pleasant - or unpleasant - recordings are some of the finest songs the entire genre has to offer. But, the album truly shines with its two lead singles - Alice In Chains has always had an affinity for being able to perfectly pinpoint on every album - Man in the Box and We Die Young.
Prior to their follow-up Dirt, the album is a precursor to what would be one of the greatest albums in rock music history, but stands on its two feet as a shining example of how to execute layered trepidation across multiple tracks.
