10 Grunge Songs That Are Insanely Heavy
1. Love Hate Love - Alice In Chains
If you go back through the history of grunge, Alice in Chains actually got the ball rolling a lot earlier than you'd expect. Way before Kurt Cobain started the alt rock explosion in 1991, Alice were already gaining traction off their first few records, with songs like Man in the Box earning them slots opening for the likes of Megadeth and Van Halen back in the day. Alternative never felt like a comfortable description for them though...they always felt more at home in the world of metal.
Going through their first album Facelift, most of the songs fall more in the realm of Sabbath style rock tunes than anything grunge related. While something like Man in the Box or even Them Bones off of Dirt gave us something a little heavier than Pearl Jam, Love Hate Love is more than just scary...it's borderline disturbed. Just from the opening guitar lick, you can tell that something isn't quite right, only for Layne Staley to come in and sing as if he's being tortured by every word that comes out of his mouth.
As the lyrics unfold talking about an angel that's caught on the wrong side of town, this is a song that feels like it works best within the context of a horror movie than an actual rock concert. It's also no surprise that Alice used this song as the centerpiece of auditions once regrouping after Layne's passing. If you don't have the darkness in your soul to pull off something like this, than it's not worth continuing on.
