10 Happy Songs With Really Dark Endings

1. Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz

There's pretty much no way any millennial kid managed to get away from the song Feel Good Inc. when it first came to light in 2005. Even though the music of Gorillaz didn't fit neatly in any genre, the hypnotic groove of the bassline and the relentless "feel good" refrain made every single demographic stand up and pay attention whenever the video blasted over MTV. So how the hell is something this infectious linked to something sad?

Well, there's something to be said about that Inc. in the title. Considering the rest of the album Demon Days is supposed to be a sort of journey through different nightmarish situations, Feel Good Inc. plays on the idea of manufactured happiness, as 2-D paints a picture of a melancholy town, with only the windmill bringing him comfort.

Then again, we do get a bit of levity in the verses from De La Soul, as they pontificate about using their own music and soul as a force to "kill the Inc." Since the sunshine of the choruses liven everything up, it seems that all will be okay, until we just revert back to the same static bassline and the feel good sentiment echoed on further. For as hard as the Gorillaz may fight for something more human than the corporate machines, the final moments show that resistance may be futile.
