10 Happy Songs With Really Dark Endings
2. Dead! - My Chemical Romance
A lot of the hardcore emo stuff doesn't really get misconstrued into sounding happy all that often. Just one look at a typical album from the likes of Brand New or Sunny Day Real Estate will tell you that these are bands that sing about dark topics and are going to drown in their sadness before too long. But taking a song about death and making it sound cheery and upbeat...that's something completely different.
When first hitting upon the idea for the Black Parade, My Chemical Romance pulled out all the stops for the opening track Dead!, as we're sent on an absolute thrill ride through rock's glory days with an upbeat guitar line and one of the most energetic Gerard Way vocal performances ever. Even the flatline sound effect at the very beginning feels exhilarating, as we transition into Ray Toro's amazing solo chops and a groove that Queen would have recognized in an instant.
It's not like they're not playing it up either, with Way taking on different vocal mannerisms to play the doctor telling our Patient that he only has two weeks to live before going into one of the forceful moments on the record. Even though this guy's days are numbered at this point, this one song is the start of a sendoff for the ages.
