10 Happy Songs With Really Dark Endings

8. The Long and Winding Road - The Beatles

The entire fallout of the Beatles has been documented far too many times for average rock listeners to keep count anymore. Although many point to Yoko Ono as the lynchpin for everything going wrong, the dissolution of the Fab Four came from the fact that they were growing further apart from each other creatively and wanted to experiment with their own solo ventures. Whereas Let It Be provided a silver lining for the group's career, there's actually a lot more going on in the Long and Winding Road.

For all of the grand instrumentation courtesy of Phil Spector, this Paul McCartney ballad is not necessarily all sunshine and roses, as he talks about his former lover leaving him and having to venture back to her door. This kind of thing would normally fly in the world of country music, only to come crashing down when the song doesn't resolve.

Since the track ends with "lead me to your door," we never get an answer as to whether this object of the narrator's affection ever did answer his call. Hell, the poor guy might still be sitting there in the rain with no hope for survival. As much as the Beatles were great at writing the perfect love song, they could also pull off misery like nobody else in their glory years.
