10 Happy Songs With Really Dark Endings

7. El Scorcho - Weezer

Since Weezer hit upon perfection with their colorful debut album in 1994, a lot of people tended to see their followup Pinkerton as a bit of a comedown. Aside from the massive critical reevaluation it has received in recent years, the opening rollout of this album was not really what the pop punk nerds were looking for from the guys who gave you songs like Buddy Holly. Especially when it comes to Rivers Cuomo getting a little too personal...

Being a reaction to his newfound fame, El Scorcho is Rivers at his most pathetic, as he talks about the object of his affection that is too far out of reach. Though this kind of thing should go over well being sung from the man known for his thick nerd glasses, it takes a weird turn when you reach the chorus, as Cuomo talks about making feeble attempts to talk to this girl, who probably doesn't even know he exists.

The bridge is what really makes this song a lot darker, as Cuomo ends up falling for this girl and having to put it down in writing so he will never forget her. Even though half of Weezer's charm comes from the fact that they branded themselves as dorks, writing songs as a way of getting around social interaction is definitely a darker way of going through life.
