10 Happy Songs With Really Dark Endings
4. Mother's Little Helper - The Rolling Stones
Since the beginning of their career, the Rolling Stones were always marketed as the more edgier version of the Beatles. Though they may have come from a more posh upbringing than the Fab Four, the songs coming from Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were drenched in the menace of old blues music coming out of the Mississippi Delta. They did clean up their act every now and again though, but that didn't mean the darkness had gone anywhere.
Following in their competitor's footsteps by using sitar on a song for the first time, Mother's Little Helper has the same type of structure of a nursery rhyme, as Mick talks about a mother needing a little boost to get her through her busy day. This is no 5 Hour Energy though, with the mom growing more and more desperate for a hit of her yellow pill before eventually coming to an overdose in the final verse.
There's no lesson to be learned here either, with the mom OD'ing on her drug, with the happy sound of the riff suddenly becoming far more deranged when you hear it in context. Still, this is probably exactly what many would expect when you ask a band like the Stones to go the wholesome route. Domestic bliss and my mother is dead...what's not to love?
