10 Happy Songs With Really Dark Endings

3. Today - Smashing Pumpkins

For all of the depressing sounds coming from the grunge movement at the turn of the '90s, Smashing Pumpkins was able to provide the slightest bit of levity. While not necessarily arena rock or anything, the triumphant sounds of Billy Corgan's riffs at least gave us a break from the sounds of Pearl Jam singing about depression or Alice in Chains droning on about the PTSD of Vietnam soldiers. So Today went back to the age old happy topic of...suicide.

You wouldn't know it from the instrumentation alone though, with the opening guitar lick sounding so happy it could have served as a jingle for an ice cream truck, which the band actually puts in the video. It's almost like they knew how happy this sounded, as Corgan decides to go in the exact opposite direction by talking about wanting to kill himself.

Although he keeps talking about how today is the greatest, every lyric outside of the hook line has a far more downtrodden bent to it, from Corgan singing that he might not have the chance to see tomorrow and wanting to tear his own heart out by the end of the day. Within the span of 3 minutes, we've gotten the sound of childlike joy juxtaposed with a lyric sheet that sounds like it could have made a decent metal song. Cynicism, dejection, and an absolute taste for irony...in other words, every single thing that the '90s loves.
