10 Hard Rock Albums Saved By One Song
6. Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
As the '80s got underway, Def Leppard were quickly gaining traction as one of the greatest bands in hair metal. After albums like High N Dry showed the band's grit, Pyromania was the mix of pop rock they needed to touch the masses. Though they were eventually able to top themselves with Hysteria, that ascent had a bit of a rough start.
Sure, the initial singles like "Animal" set the record up nicely, but once the entire album was finished, the management decided to put the song "Women" out as a single first. While there's nothing necessarily wrong with the track, the darker groove behind it left most fans underwhelmed for what was to follow. As the band tried their best to alleviate it with by releasing the title track, many were skeptical as to whether the album would really take off.
Unsure of what to do, the band decided to throw caution to the wind and release a song that they wrote at the 11th hour called "Pour Some Sugar On Me." On the strength of that one song, the band conquered both the hard rock and pop landscape with the perfect mix of catchy hooks and pure rock power. It may have been tense trying to achieve perfection, but "Pour Some Sugar On Me" ended up surpassing even the band's wildest dreams.
