10 Hard Rock Albums That Divided The Fanbase
7. Permanent Vacation - Aerosmith
As Aerosmith made their way into the 80's, they were in the middle of a downward spiral. After losing both of their guitarists and Steven Tyler getting more and more strung out on drugs, the band were in grave danger of looking like has-beens. Shortly after Joe Perry returned to the fold, the band's album Done With Mirrors was a good comeback, but didn't find a footing on the charts.
Determined to become relevant again, Tyler and Perry eventually hooked up with producer and songwriter Desmond Child, who brought them make from the edge with the album Permanent Vacation. This record launched the band back into the stratosphere with hits like "Angel" and "Rag Doll" becoming MTV classics.
So, what's the catch? Well, while many of these tracks are great, some fans see this as the point where the band started falling into bad habits. The outside songwriters on the record were used very tastefully, but this more refined approach to writing would eventually lead to career missteps like on Just Push Play and the poptastic "Girls of Summer." This album may have been just what the doctor ordered at the time, but it was clear that darker days were waiting on the horizon.
