10 Hard Rock Albums That Were A Nightmare To Make

6. Who's Next - The Who

After years of being known as a Mod rock band, the Who started to turn their career into something way more ambitious in the late 60's. With each record having a more conceptual theme to it, the band's 1969 release Tommy marked one of the first rock operas as well as the arrival of Pete Townshend as one of the greatest songwriters in the business. When the band reassembled after the tour, the plan was simple: do it all over again.

As they were on the road, Townshend had come up with an idea for a project called Lifehouse, which would be a dystopian tale of a boy finding salvation through music. The story would be the perfect companion piece to Tommy as well as being an independent force of nature in its own right. Though the band struggled to understand the concept, they were more than willing to give it a try.

While Townshend had the basic tracks of most of the dramatic moments of the rock opera, none of the band could agree as to where the concept would go and scrapped the rock opera idea entirely. The result was Who's Next, a record with the band's greatest material to date, but a shadow of what Townshend's grand ambitions could have been.
