10 Hard Rock Albums That Were A Nightmare To Make

4. The Colour and the Shape - Foo Fighters

The Foo Fighters' debut record was a blast of joy amid the post-Nirvana boom. While fans were still reeling from the death of Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl's first songwriting escapades outside the grunge monster was just what fans needed to heal. The debut may have been a nice start, but following it up proved to be a bit more strenuous.

Though the band's debut featured Grohl playing everything, the Colour and the Shape was the first record to be made with an entire band in mind. Everything seemed to being going well at first, but drummer William Goldsmith was having a hard time gelling with the rest of the band's sound. This got so out of hand that Grohl would secretly re-record the entire record with his own drum tracks rather than keep Goldsmith's.

Even though Grohl still wanted a solid drummer in the band, Goldsmith was furious and quit on the spot, refusing to be just a touring drummer. The band would eventually pick up Taylor Hawkins as their drummer, but the tour for the record also ended with guitarist Pat Smear quitting, hiring Franz Stahl, and then firing Stahl due to his incompatibility with the band. This is by far the band's most solid release, but these great tunes did come with a heavy price.
