10 Hard Rock Albums That Were A Nightmare To Make

2. End of the Century - The Ramones

The Ramones were just what rock and roll needed in the late 70's. While all the other bands were getting too big for their own good, these badasses from New York blasted a hole in the rock world that signaled the start of punk music. The band had delivered some of the best music around, yet mainstream success continued to be out of reach.

In an attempt to give them more mainstream appeal, the band went into the studio with legendary producer Phil Spector, who created some of the greatest radio hits of the 1960's. Then again, this is also the same Phil Spector whose unwieldy personality was only matched by his love of firearms.

From the outset, there were disagreements between the two camps, with Spector trying everything he could to clean up the rough and tumble sound of the band's tunes.

This included but wasn't limited to Spector disciplining drummer Marky Ramone by making him hit the same snare drum for hours on end. In addition to the more authoritarian recording schedule, Spector kept three guns with him at all times, which absolutely mortified the band members. While songs like "Rock n Roll High School" hold up as classics now, the idea of being at the hand of the lunatic that is Phil Spector will give you a greater appreciation for every one of these tunes.
