10 Hard Rock Albums With Only One Good Song

4. Night In The Ruts - Aerosmith

It's hard to even call Night in the Ruts a proper Aerosmith album. After many years of sparring with frontman Steven Tyler, Joe Perry abruptly quit to pursue a solo career. Not realizing the star power of their guitarist, the band quickly regrouped with new six-stringer Jimmy Crespo thinking no one would notice. Suffice to say, we did.

Though the album was recorded with Perry having one foot out the door, "No Surprize" does show some of that trademark magic Tyler and Perry were known for in their early years. The song is one of the band's earliest compositions, as it tells the story of the band playing the famous Max's Kansas City and getting signed by industry mogul Clive Davis.

The youthful exuberance is immediately palpable in the music, with Brad Whitford trading lines that are absolutely blistering. Though the song was a great introduction to the classic Aerosmith sound, the rest of the album appears somewhat lackluster, being mostly dominated by cover songs and half baked lyrical ideas.

While the music was certainly different, much of the decline came from losing the second rockstar of the band. Though the band originally reunited with Perry in the 80's, the interim years with Jimmy Crespo are still seen as the band's most milquetoast period.
