10 Hard Rock Bands That Made The Same Song Twice
9. Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer
Livin' On A Prayer first cut the airwaves in 1986 as the second single off Bon Jovi's iconic Slippery When Wet album. Since then, the song's anthemic chorus has become a mainstay for rock radio, wedding playlists and karaoke bars. And, less than a decade later, the rock troupe were back in the studio doing it all over again for 1994 greatest hits record Cross Road.
Prayer ‘94 is a downbeat, stripped-back version that makes liberal use of a programmed drum track, mutes the electric guitar and adds in odd backing responses to the lead vocal. But that's not even the worst of it. Evidently not recognising what made the original a success, the chorus is completely flattened so as to be almost unrecognisable.
And, in the years since, the band have released various live, acoustic and additional versions of the song. Talk about flogging a dead horse... Well, this deceased equid has earned Jon Bon and co. their millions and probably put their kids through college.
But did the big man need to keep remaking Livin' On A Player in order for it, or him, to remain relevant? Of course not. Bon Jovi have long since slid into the dad rock genre, making any effort to keep them vibrant and current null and void; and the original version of Prayer continues to net millions in royalties every year, with the song recently celebrating one billion streams.
