10 Hard Rock Bands Who FIRED Important Members

3. Metallica - Dave Mustaine

As the years go on, it feels like Dave Mustaine's contribution to Metallica keeps getting wiped out of the metal community's collective memory. And for good reason too, since Dave has proven that he could make it on his own with Megadeth no matter how big his older band seems to get.

Then again, how do you find yourself in a band nicknamed Alcoholica and then get shown the door for drinking too much?

Well, alcohol always affects people differently, and Dave's behavior on the first few tours with Metallica were getting more and more out of hand. When the band finally got a chance to sign with Megaforce Records on the East Coast, their trip to New York was marred by Mustaine trashing people's houses and getting into fights that got them into serious trouble.

By the time they had gotten to New York, Mustaine was handed a Greyhound bus ticket back to California, with Kirk Hammett coming on for Kill Em All. Having written a good chunk of the material, it became more of an issue when Dave's riffs started showing up on some Metallica classics like The Call of Ktulu and The Four Horsemen.

At the same time, it takes a special kind of metalhead to start all the way back at square one and make it to the top of the food chain twice.
