10 Hard Rock Cover Songs That Are Better Than The Original

2. Where Did You Sleep Last Night - Nirvana

Nirvana's appearance on MTV Unplugged has gone down in history as one of the greatest acoustic shows in the history of rock music. Rather than just the simple stripped down sets that most artists would be used to, this intimate look into these grunge icons' songs served as a look behind the curtain, as well as a goodbye when Kurt Cobain was found dead just a few months after its taping. Despite the practical treasure trove of cover songs on display here, Cobain truly saved the best for last with Where Did You Sleep Last Night.

Originally performed by the legendary blues musician LeadBelly, Nirvana casually lifts this song up to a cathartic experience from the moment they start playing. After some in-studio banter, the dry sound of Cobain's guitar cuts through the mix, as he starts to sing about his love being unfaithful. Rather than just keep it at a normal pace, this song truly feels like being strapped to a musical rocket, as Cobain keeps building with intensity with every verse before full on shouting towards the last verse.

This eventually culminated in one of the most subtle and heartbreaking moments in Nirvana's history, where the camera seems to capture what looks like an out of body experience Kurt had while playing, as if he's so taken by the music that he needs to expel his internal demons through song. Given that this was one of the last true Nirvana gigs to be shown to the public, this ominous ending captured all the darkness in Cobain's soul.
