10 Hard Rock Song Lyrics That Nobody Understands

5. Only In America We Kill The Unborn To Make Ends Meet

Penned by Scott Stapp and Mark Tremonti, Creed's In America appeared on 1997's My Own Prison, and features a long-vowelled tale of moral confusion at the state of 1990s North American life. Though the band have insisted otherwise, Creed's Christ imagery, Christian themes and biblical morality-peddling lyrics, betray their status as a Christian rock band.

While many have taken issue with Creed's apparent condemnation of the USA for democratic issues and unjust practices, the lyric 'Only in America we kill the unborn to make ends meet', is particularly controversial. It seems to suggest a connection between abortion, poverty and the States, which many listeners looked to deny, either in practice or exclusivity.

In America is definitely rallying a somewhat damning indictment against the ways in which the USA's society operates, focusing in on the controversial topic of abortion. But it is not actually trying to claim that it is a uniquely American problem - the purpose of the lyric is simply to highlight one of the many injustices within this apparently rich and moral society.
