At the end of the '80s, Motley Crue were about to reach their final form. After ruling the Sunset Strip for almost a full decade, the band had come out with some of their strongest material yet on Dr. Feelgood, which took them from another hair metal band to kings of the genre. Though the band labored over each track, the one that ended up sticking around took almost no time at all.

When going through ideas, Nikki Sixx had accidentally shown management a riff that he had been toying with for the past few months. Even though everyone in the band saw the potential in the tune, Sixx was pretty reluctant to record the song because of its rudimentary style, which was far removed from the heavier stuff the band were taking on.

After recording "Kickstart My Heart," the band tucked it in the middle of the record, but it was quickly picked up on radio and became one of the biggest hits that the band had ever attained. In just a few short weeks, this little punky experiment went from being not even included on the record to one of the songs that has come to define the band's sleazy sound.
