10 Hard Rock Songs Added At The Last Minute
7. Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith
Before Aerosmith had completed Toys in the Attic, they were still just a humble hard rock band trying to establish their footing. After weeks of recording sessions, producer Jack Douglas asked if the band had any more riffs that they could work with. Once they came back the next day, Tom Hamilton had created the bass line that would take the band to the top.
Centered around Hamilton's throbbing, the band put all of their final effort into "Sweet Emotion," whose otherworldly aura was unlike anything they had done up to that point, with some of the fattest guitar riffs on the entire record. Hamilton's initial idea ended up being such a great hook line that the guitars are barely playing during the intro, as the listener gets slowly enticed by the bouncy hysteria going on underneath.
Trying to find material for lyrics, Steven Tyler was partly inspired by the frustration he had with guitarist Joe Perry being out with his girlfriend every time the band were supposed to write. The lyrics may have been a bit juvenile, but the power behind the music made the song feel like it was being channeled from another dimension. Toys in the Attic would go on to become a legendary album, but without something like "Sweet Emotion," Aerosmith would have missed out on one of their most soulful cuts.
