The Beatles were on their way to bigger and better things with the release of the album Rubber Soul. Serving as the Fabs' answer to the folk rock movement, the album left fans itching for more of the fabulous sonic experiments the band would be reaching for in the future. Once "Paperback Writer" was unleashed on the public, the band showed the world they had no intention of slowing down.
While the band's previous effort had more psychedelic elements like the addition of sitar and fuzz bass, this single cut is the sound of the Beatles after being dipped in acid rock. The opening guitar lick from George Harrison sends the listener off as McCartney intones a tale of a down-on-his-luck writer who is looking to get his book published. The band's exquisite blend of harmony on the intro is something that was unmatched at the time, along with being impossible to reproduce live.
With the band using the studio like an actual instrument, the band quickly found that their live performances were not doing justice to the actual recordings.
