10 Hardest Drumming Songs In Hard Rock
8. Everlong - Foo Fighters
Most drummers know that Dave Grohl's style tends to be fairly straight and to the point. Ever since his days in Nirvana, Grohl's drumming style was meant to be as simple as possible, even comparing the songwriting method in the Nevermind days to writing children's songs. If Everlong was compared to a children song though, this would be the most complex nursery rhyme ever conceived.
While the song itself is your standard hard edged rock song from the '90s, Grohl is all over the kit from beginning to end, tracking most of it in the studio himself. The song already starts strong with a muscly verse section, which Grohl accentuates with some intense hi hat rolls to build up the tension. Once the chorus opens everything up though, you can really hear him kick things up a notch, dropping in a fill every time he leaves space open in the melodic lines.
The competence level for playing something like this almost caused a breakup in and of itself, with William Goldsmith quitting the band after Grohl rerecorded the track to get a better take behind his back. Even though Grohl may discount his drumming capabilities every now and again, this is about as close to a John Bonham sized beat as you could find in the post grunge world.
