10 Hated '90s Rock Songs That Are Actually Really Good

7. Oasis - D’You Know What I Mean?

Oasis’ third record Be Here Now was controversial on its release due to the money spent and drugs consumed. In the years hence, its critical stock has plummeted, and the monolithic album has become a cautionary tale for bands who get too high on their own supply.

The truth is a little less dramatic than that: it’s just quite a long, boring album of long, boring songs that’s hard to swallow in one go. Taken on a song by song basis, though, Be Here Now has some high spots, not least its opening track, “D’You Know What I Mean?”

The drone-like quality of Be Here Now turns chirpy songs like “All Around The World” into painfully dull marathons, but on “D’You Know What I Mean?” the slow, heavy, multi-tracked stomp really works. The lyrics are trademark Oasis nonsense, belted out with gusto by Liam, and the band take full advantage of the millions pumped into studio time, making a song that sounds laughably, recklessly huge.

The album then goes on and on from there, but “D’You Know What I Mean?” will probably slake your thirst for Oasis at their most bombastic. This isn’t Britpop’s swansong, it’s a funeral dirge.
