10 Hated Rock Bands With One Amazing Album
7. Train - Train
Okay...but if you want to talk about selling out, we're going to have to spend a lengthy devotion to whatever the hell Pat Monahan did to Train over the years. Granted, these guys were never on the level of like Slayer or anything, but their attention to rootsy rock was definitely a much better fit for them than when they tried ripping off Heart and Soul these days on Play That Song. So next time Hey Soul Sister drives you up the wall, just give their debut a spin instead.
Along with their follow up album Drops of Jupiter, this is one of the few times where Train actually felt like a band rather than a business strategy, with Pat actually having some decent lines on songs like Meet Virginia. Though the adult alternative scene wasn't short of bands like this in the late '90s, these are definitely on the better side of things compared to the mellow sounds of Lifehouse later.
From the raw production of this, you can at least see the Counting Crows style band that they were trying to be, only with a singer that was a bit on the higher side of the spectrum. Not a great effort by any stretch, but boy does this kick the ass of something like A Girl A Bottle A Boat any day of the week.
