10 Hated Rock Bands With One Amazing Album
3. The Grand Illusion - Styx
It almost feels like every critic is required by law to have some nasty things to say about Styx. Even in their heyday, the band of mainstream rock and roll always felt a bit out of place in their genre, almost too pop for the complex side of rock but also too progressive for full soft rock territory. In between the lackluster reviews though, there was that one little sweet spot with the Grand Illusion.
In the first of what we become a long string of concept albums, this is the kind of record that actually has a genuine story to tell, with the band putting on an almost circus like atmosphere from the opening track and never letting up on the hooks. While it might be a bit of stretch for some people to get used to the voice of Dennis DeYoung, songs like Come Sail Away and Angry Young Man are still classics for a reason, with singalong choruses that can still hit you in the feels if you're not ready for it.
There are even some heavier moments on the record as well, with Miss America having JY Young at the mic and Grand Finale wrapping things up in a neat package. It might not be a show that you'd frequent every day or anything, but you'll never not enjoy your time here whenever you decide to spin it.
