10 Hated Rock Songs That Are Actually Really Good
8. Temporary Secretary - Paul McCartney
Whenever Paul McCartney decides to go experimental, there's always a 50/50 shot whether his fans are going to like it. Though he gave us some of the most unorthodox rock songs with the Beatles, there was also songs like Ob La Di Ob La Da, which falls more on the side of annoying than anything else. The '80s were a new decade for McCartney though, and he showed his love of everything electronic on Temporary Secretary.
When people start to clown on this song, they normally talk about the vocal affectations that Paul is using, being very nasally and sounding a bit too annoying to really take all that seriously. As the years go on though, Macca was actually a little bit ahead of his time with a song like this, taking the kind of electronic foundation you would find in house music and making something that sounds ripped straight out of a neurotic fever dream.
In fact, most of McCartney II has held up surprisingly well over the years. While the synthesizers might sound a little bit primitive compared to what Tears for Fears would be doing with them just a few years later, you can hear Paul trying his best to push himself as a songwriter rather than just following the trends. With years under his belt, Paul was ready to buck the trends and made a song that could still fill up dancefloors to this day. And if this and Coming Up were the songs that inspired John Lennon to write again, they've certainly earned their place in history.
