10 Heaviest Metallica Songs Ever Made
7. Am I Savage?
With only a few years of hindsight, it's safe to say that Metallica's latest Hardwired was a bit of a mixed bag. Though it did tend to merit its double album status, there was a lot more fat that could have been trimmed from the runtime, with songs droning on a lot longer than they should have. Despite losing a few dead pieces, the groove of Am I Savage? is virtually untouchable.
Even saying that now is a bit controversial, with most Metallica diehards hating this song when they first heard it on the record. While some fans were worried about them regressing into bad habits, it's still a great song with one hell of a weird groove to it. This is the kind of experimentation that made for the best parts of the Load era, as Metallica just use this hurky jerky rhythm and make something that feels like a monster coming into existence.
In addition to just the rhythm, this song is the home of one of the most classic riffs on the entire record, when the song drops out to this booming lick with harmonics that sound like electronic surges peeling through concrete. Given all of the faults of Metallica's latest, it's almost worth it to see the old dogs learn a few new tricks like these.
