10 Hidden Details In Hard Rock Tracks You Never Noticed

1. Tool Uses Mathamatics On Lateralus

Tool have been known in rock circles as one of the most complicated bands in the entirety of the metal scene. Listening to some of their songs feels like the sonic equivalent of solving differential equations all while banging your head. Given their advanced pedigree, it's not surprising that the band eventually found a way to combine both of these concepts into one song.

The group's third release Lateralus stands as one of their greatest works, but something even more trippy is present on the title track. The band constructed the tune being inspired by the Fibonacci Sequence of numbers, where each number is the sum of the two previous numbers. Wanting to stuff their song with as much Easter Eggs as possible, Danny Carey's drum part shifts in meters that parallel with the Fibonacci Sequence while the actual syllabic structure of Maynard James Keenan's lyrics follow the sequence before going back down again.

The song's themes of riding the wave of consciousness and not trying to pull against the tide of life also conjures up images of the mathmatical concept the Fibonacci Spiral. By breaking their song into artificial pieces, Tool ironically created one of the most thought-provoking tunes about one's humanity.
