10 Hidden Details In Legendary Rock Songs
8. Even the Losers - Tom Petty
Working with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers during the recording of Damn the Torpedoes was probably the musical equivalent of being in the Army. Apart from the lawsuit that was breathing down Petty's neck about his publishing deal, the band got whipped into shape by Jimmy Iovine, making them play songs like Refugee countless times until they finally settled on a version they were happy with. You can hear all those hours in these songs, but there were also some family drama that worked its way onto the vinyl as well.
During the songwriting sessions for the album, guitarist Mike Campbell would make instrumental demos and send them to Tom to potentially write over, which turned into tracks like Here Comes My Girl. When they were taking apart the original demo of the song though, the band lined up the final mix of Even the Losers over the end of the demo, where you can hear Campbell's wife screaming 'it's just the normal noises in here' before the song kicks in.
What had happened was Mike was recording in one room of his house and was getting irritated about the laundry making too much noise, and what you're hearing on the tape is his wife's snide gripe back at him. Since the rest of these recording sessions tended to be torture for everyone involved, you needed moments like this to break up the tension in between another marathon session.
