10 Hidden Details In Legendary Rock Songs

5. Roxanne - The Police

In the era when punk rock dominated, The Police may have been some of the most accomplished musicians to ever win over the CBGB crowd. Sting had already spent time studying music and was working as a teacher before the band even got started, so he wasn't that worried about sounding like a grown up when they came out with their first few records. They were still green in the studio on Outlandos D'Amour though, and some of the studio hijinx tended to happen completely by accident.

When the opening to Roxanne starts off, you can hear Sting laughing before the track begins, as the song fades in and the guitar stabs hit you. While this may have just been a clever bit of cheeky humor about the nasty story that we're about to hear, you can also hear a piano in the mix as well, which happened when Sting was listening to the initial mix of the song and accidentally sat on the piano keys while the track faded in.

Since Sting was on beat with the music though, the band thought it was hilarious and figured they'd leave it in as just another aside from the session, giving the impression that you're watching the band in the room playing the songs, warts and all. Roxanne eventually went on to be the biggest hit from the record, and Sting even got his own credit on the back sleeve of the record, being credited for 'butt piano' on the final mix.
