10 Hidden Details You Never Noticed In Hard Rock Songs
7. Even Flow - Pearl Jam
At the start of Pearl Jam's career, it seemed like they were making one classic after another. From the arena rock bombast of something like "Alive" to the harrowing tale of suicide on "Jeremy," these guys from Seattle were becoming the new faces of rock overnight. Their star was rising so quickly that most censors didn't have time to pick up on Eddie Vedder's lyrics.
Given the fast pace and slipshod delivery, "Even Flow" is known as one of the few Pearl Jam songs no one can understand, as Vedder's yarl gets in the way of the actual lyrics.
However, that ends up playing to the band's advantage when they were bypassing the uptight language restrictions. As Vedder rides the rhythm and talks about laying on a "pillow made of concrete," you can hear him do various ad libs in between, one of which is very clearly "f**k yeah."
This kind of thing would normally have people clamoring to clean up the language, but the vibe of the song was so good that people didn't even care to look at the words. Pearl Jam were never meant to be the biggest band in the world, and little details like this showed that they weren't looking to become just your standard radio rock act.
