10 Hilarious Joke Songs By Rock Artists

From Headbangers to Hilarity.

For any aspiring songwriter, inspiration should always be a bit close to the chest. As much as you might find it easy to string a melody together, it takes something special to capture a certain feeling that resonates with you along with millions of people around the world. Then again, it works just as well when you're trying to make people laugh.

Over the course of history, bands have strayed from the pack and wrote songs specifically about something funny, whether it's something that happened in their own lives or just their own adolescent hijinx coming out in song. Keep in mind though that these have to be rock artists, who are known mostly for making serious music rather than the funny hahas. So no Tenacious D on here... they're their own separate thing.

On the other hand, no more than one song per artist either. There have been many bands who have moonlighted in the comedy industry so it wouldn't be fair to put them on here multiple times (in which case, Blink 182 would have their own category on here).

These are just a short snippet of the people that dropped all of the rockstar BS for a minute and decided to take the piss out of themselves. Because the rock industry can be a bit insane sometimes, so it's nice to at least have somebody lightening the mood.

10. Bank Holiday - Blur

When the Britpop explosion started to really get its sea legs, there seemed to be a clear divide between the camps of Oasis and Blur. Compared to the working class kind of songs you were getting out of the Gallagher brothers, here was Damon Albarn putting together songs about how sad it was to lead a boring life while being rich as hell. Although there was a lot more nuance to Blur's writing, that didn't mean they couldn't still take the piss out of themselves.

Across Parklife, the subject matter is actually pretty dark, being more informed by working class people losing touch with reality. After going through something like Tracy Jacks and End of the Century, Bank Holiday is one of the funnier songs that you were going to hear, being much more punk leaning than anything else that the band had ever recorded.

Rather than just go down the rabbit hole of working class jobs, this is just a fun romp about a bunch of lads going on their bank holiday and going off the rails in the process, getting pissed out of their minds before they have to go back to work when everything ends. If anything though, there's probably still a little bit of that trademark Blur cynicism in there, considering these guys don't even know how much they're burning themselves out whenever they get trashed. Blur were always meant to be the jaded version of the Kinks though, and Bank Holiday is one of those jokes that gets funnier and more tragic the more you hear it.
