10 Hilariously Bad Musicians That Are Crazy Successful
7. Sugar Ray
Out of all bands in rock and roll, there are a few that can just be considered harmless. As much as someone like the Grateful Dead may get called one of the greatest bands in history just for their jam band sound, it's not like their music is necessarily hurting anyone at the end of the day. No...to nab a spot on this list, you need to go the extra mile to make something unlistenable, and Sugar Ray fits that bill to a tee.
The hilarity of this band can't be distilled into just your average song though. No, to understand completely, you have to go back to the early days of Sugar Ray, where they managed to have songs that were a little bit more nu metal tinged with a fair bit of crunch. While they weren't the hottest band in town or anything, the stark shift into radio-friendly pop rock is what really set them reeling.
Make no mistake, these guys sold out HARD with songs like Fly and Someday, which feel like a completely different band when you look back on what they had to offer in the early days. From that point on, Sugar Ray have basically been profiting off the wine mom circuit for years, going so far as to call their album Music for Cougars as a joke. No band can call themselves safe from selling out, but oh how the mighty (or in this case decent) have fallen.
