10 Hip Hop Songs With Surprising Samples

10. Ja Rule's "Murder Reigns" Samples Africa By Toto

This may be a little hard for some people to believe, but there was once was a time where Ja Rule was one of the biggest artists in hip hop music. That's right, Edwin from The Fast and Furious was actually peers with with the likes of DMX and Jay Z. Despite his ability to stand toe-to-toe with some of the finest in hip hop during the early 2000's, once Rule got a whiff of the money he could make in pop music he quickly made the switch to swapping bars with credible MCs to sharing the stage with pop goddess Jennifer Lopez. Quite a change in scenery. Arguably the strangest choice Rule ever made - besides attempting to take on Eminem in rap beef, something that's seen as career suicide by many - was to put out a song called Murder Reigns, which heavily samples Africa by Toto, on his 2002 album The Last Temptation. Now, this is far from the worst song Rule has ever made, but it's incredibly hard to take a rapper seriously whose catchphrase is "It's Murder!" when all you can do is hum the words to Africa in your head when you hear this song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtggWqmekmY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTQbiNvZqaY
