10 Horrible Hard Rock Songs By Great Artists

7. Meat Is Murder - The Smiths

The entire alternative rock scene would look a lot different if it weren't for the Smiths. At a time when the pop scene was jumping on the neon-colored bandwagon, these indie darlings were putting together some of the most heartbreaking tales of lost love ever released, with Johnny Marr and Morrissey becoming some of the most celebrated icons of the British underground. They may have been on the rise, but we also got a peek into Morrissey's opinions on "Meat is Murder."

After the band had made their first stab at success on their debut, this closing track to their second album is one of the most cynical indictments of animal abuse in the rock canon. While Morrissey's vegetarian beliefs are a noble effort on his part, he spends the entire 6 minutes of this song talking about how if you are not a vegetarian, you're basically a terrible person.

There is definitely some food for thought in here somewhere, but the holier than thou attitude that Morrissey presents here is the first time fans got to see the more deplorable side of one of the greatest frontmen of the '80s. For a man that is against the consumption of animals, isn't it against your moral code to write something that's this ham-fisted?
