10 Huge Rock Artists That Went Electronic (And Nailed It)
9. The White Stripes
Of all the bands that could embrace their electronic side, it makes zero sense to see someone like the White Stripes doing it. Since they were birthed out of the DIY mindset, Jack and Meg White's brainchild was always about stripping things back down to basics, not having to worry about the glitchy effects you can add in afterwards. The White Stripes were also about what could be done with just two people, and Jack started to go a little berzerk by the time they hit Icky Thump.
Granted, this is not electronic in the traditional sense that we're all used to. Rather than just bring in a synthesizer and reinvent himself as an electronic artist, Jack filters every one of his outlandish ideas through different effects on his guitar, making for a strange sound on nearly every song he plays. Aside from a few token appearances of acoustic guitar, you've got Jack making his guitar sound like it's coming out of some crappy radio on the title track and even mimicking the sound of a trumpet on Conquest.
This turned out to be a sign of things to come though, with most of Jack White's solo work taking the basis of what was started on here and dialing up the intensity on every single record. The Stripes are by no means electronic artists. They were just your average rock band with a digital chaser.
