10 Huge Rock Artists That Went Electronic (And Nailed It)
5. Paul McCartney
Given how long he's been making music, Paul McCartney has basically made every style of music that suits him these days. Ever since leaving the Beatles, he went the country route with RAM, got himself back into the pop world with Wings' hits, and in his older age has even sang old standards and produced operas away from rock. The electronic stuff is normally reserved for his side project the Fireman, but his digital bug actually came a few years earlier.
Around the time that Wings was still in limbo, Paul was feeling inspired and decided to make an entire record by himself using a DIY setup with electronic instruments. Being one of the main outliers in his catalog, McCartney II is one of the more eccentric Macca records you will ever listen to, with songs that sound like a mix between the art rock of the Talking Heads and some glitchy rock fever dream.
Along with some of the freakout moments like Temporary Secretary, there are ballads like Waterfalls that have McCartney's heartfelt touch. There are also moments here where the album goes fully instrumental, with Paul finding his niche making music that could fit nicely in the background of an airport. While the modern day heroes of electronica at the time were Brian Eno, Paul never intended to stop exploring once the '80s began.
