10 HYPED Albums That Didn't Live Up To Their High Expectations

6. Trilogy - Green Day

It takes something special to get a new fanbase across two separate generations, and Green Day were turning themselves into that rare breed of bands. After becoming the lovable brats all the way on Dookie, the rise of Bush's America during the Iraq War gave them a whole new set of fans on American Idiot, looking to rally with Billie Joe about not being a '00s burnout. No band can be that bombastic forever though, and Green Day had a hard time getting back to basics on the trilogy.

In fact, most of the reason why this album cycle didn't live up to the hype almost has nothing to do with the music. Just going through most of these songs, the traditional Green Day that you know is still in there...they just sound so bored doing what they're doing. These guys had been playing nonstop for decades, and hearing them throw together three albums worth of material is where you really start to feel them phoning it in.

While every album is tied together with a certain theme, it's hard to really see them as just your standard Green Day songs, especially on Dos where they start toying with sleaze rock on Nightlife and fail miserably. The trilogy may have sounded absolutely amazing for Green Day fans, but what we got is a pretty good lesson on why creativity needs a break every now and again.
