10 HYPED Albums That Didn't Live Up To Their High Expectations

5. Vitalogy - Pearl Jam

Any Pearl Jam record that was coming out in the mid '90s had the potential to be absolutely massive. During the process of making Vs. though, you could already feel the tension within the band, as Eddie Vedder got more and more uncomfortable with his newfound fame and trying to stay true to his roots. The band were definitely going through some hard times, and you can really hear that on most of Vitalogy.

Then again, this is not a bad record by any stretch of the imagination. Hell, this might be the record that has some of the best songs that Pearl Jam ever wrote, from the radio rock of Corduroy to the heartbroken ballad Nothingman. The only thing that brings this record down is that it has...let's just call them moments. In between the regular album tracks, you can hear the band getting their frustration out in song, like on Bugs where Eddie breaks out the accordion for a tune or the ending track Stupid Mop, where the band try to recreate the bug nutty sounds of the Beatles' Revolution 9.

All of those moments don't take away from the rest of the album though, with songs that could stand toe to toe with almost anything off of Ten. Outside of the classic tunes, the interlude tracks on here feel like the band are intentionally trying to lose the mainstream audience that they got on the last few records.
