10 Iconic Rock Stars' Guitars

5. Prince - Cloud Guitar

Prince was perhaps one of the most underrated guitarist of all time. Not that he wasn't recognised as a great guitarist, but that people didn't really appreciate how extraordinary his talent was. One of the most curious things about Prince's guitar exploits was his choice of guitar. Given that he could have bought anything in the world, for many years his primary axe of choice was a budget Hondo Telecaster copy. For most people this would be a beginner's model or an intermediate guitar at best.

Prince proved the old adage that it wasn't about the equipment but about the player, by wringing out sounds from such a modest guitar that few could achieve with top of the line, state of the art equipment. Prince continued to use the Tele throughout his career, but the most famous axe that he wielded was the so-called 'cloud' guitar.

Designed by Prince, it became as iconic as the man himself. With a shape that almost mimicked the infamous 'squiggle' Prince name that he went under for a while, in protest at record company control, it was the only guitar other than the Tele that he was regularly seen with. Ironically, it is so closely associated with Prince that no other guitarists have ever adopted it.
