6. Ghost Riders In The Sky - Frankie Laine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy9AsO6argQ I think it's safe to say that "Ghost Riders In The Sky" is immediately recognisable to every country-music fan. The song has been covered by just about every country singer since the 1950s, and for good reason; the story that "Ghost Rider's" lyrics tell is haunting & compelling. "Ghost Riders In The Sky" tells the story of a cowboy out riding during a storm. He stops to rest, only to be graced by a vision of a herd of red-eyed cows stampeding across the sky. The cows are followed by a band of gaunt, ugly, sweaty cowboys. The ghostly cowboys moan (the famous "yippie-ai-aaay" chorus) as they ride. As our cowboy protagonist watches, one of the ghostly cowboys calls his name. The ghostly cowboy tells our protagonist that he must change his ways, or else risk spending an eternity with the ghostly riders, "tryin' to catch that Devil's herd across these endless skies." The song's story would need to be expanded to make it fit a feature-length film structure, but "Ghost Riders In The Sky" could be the inspiration for a cowboy-themed supernatural story. The song's protagonist would be an outlaw, on the run from the marshal and his posse for, say, murdering a man. During his attempted escape, he sees the ghost riders and receives their warning. The outlaw dismisses the vision and continues in his way, murdering another man. The outlaw is then pursued by the ghostly riders as they come down to earth to claim another of their own.
