10 Increasingly Sick Riffs From The Masters You Can Learn Right Now

2. Zakk Wylde - Overlord Solo Tapping Technique

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUM93WEzMHs Whilst the above video is a full breakdown of the entire song (so feel free to just practice the opening riff if you're after a breather), the really meaty part we're going to attempt is a section of the solo at the 3:10 mark. Go on, take a look, cry internally, and then keep reading. Ridiculous right? Well Wylde does break the whole thing down in his own way, somewhat glossing over the parts where his fingers turn into mini-tornadoes, however with that close-up its pretty easy to figure out what his fingering is, it's just a case of getting it all up to speed. However the section I think is worth extracting and utilising elsewhere in your playing is his descending tapping technique he regularly employs in his work around the 3:40 mark. It's pretty hard to see in the video but Zakk is using the side of his pick to tap the note on the B string as his fretting hand descends chromatically. It's a very intense sounding technique, and as you'll find just through playing around with some pedals, filtering it through a wah like Mr. Wylde here takes the piece to a whole new level.
