But let me assure you that this is the most important debut release of all time and blew everyone away when it first came out. Credited with popularising rap in the United States, Rappers Delight is perhaps one of the most important songs ever released. Born after rapper Fab Five Freddy and other members of The Sugarhill Gang attended a Chic concert in New York, the rappers heard Chic playing their hit Good Times, jumped onstage and began freestyling along with it. Weeks later, Chics Nile Rodgers heard the bass line of Good Times being played in a club with what was an early version of Rappers Delight, and the legendary song came to fruition. The huge amount of influence on any piece of popular music to come as Rappers Delight has never been equalled and without it, there would be no hip-hop or indeed no sampling in music.
