10 Incredible Classic Rock Albums We Never Got To Hear
5. Lifehouse - The Who
Coming to the end of the 1960's, The Who had single-handedly refined rock with their album Tommy. Being one of the first ever rock operas, the album was an artistic milestone for the genre and fulfilled Pete Townshend's vision of rock being more than just three chords. Most bands would kill to have an album like that, but Townshend was looking for something even bigger.
As the tour for Tommy was winding down, Townshend started to form an idea about a dystopian society that would be cured through the power of music. The scenario of people creating a utopia through musical harmony became known as Lifehouse, but was met with problems from the very start. Both the band and even their management couldn't quite grasp the plot of the album, which led to sessions coming to a halt.
With Townshend continuing to tinker with his idea, the stalling recordings led to him nearly suffering a complete mental breakdown. In an effort to tide things over, the band ended working with the best tunes already in progress and released them as Who's Next, which would go on to be the band's second masterpiece. Though the initial ideas have been released in fragments, there's no telling how great Lifehouse could have been if Townshend's vision was fulfilled.
