10 Incredible Classic Rock Albums We Never Got To Hear

3. Black Gold - Jimi Hendrix

Throughout his career, Jimi Hendrix always wanted to push his sound forward. Whether it was from a songwriting or production prospective, each of Hendrix's records seemed to redefine the rock landscape, from his debut to later visions like Electric Ladyland. Though Hendrix was taken from the music world too soon, the recordings from Black Gold showed he may been on the cusp of something even more extraordinary.

Coming off of Electric Ladyland, Hendrix made a few demos that would run as a concept album of sorts detailing his life in New York at the time. Much of the material existed as demos, but after Hendrix's death, the possibility for them to be fleshed out disappeared. Drummer Mitch Mitchell remembers Hendrix playing the demos for him in 1970, but nothing ever came of it since no proper studio time was booked.

Mitchell had been working with Hendrix's estate to put together a release for Black Gold, but his death before completion in 2008 puts the fate of these tapes in jeopardy. Outside of Mitchell and a few others musicians, Black Gold is likely to be a project that will only exist within the minds of fans.
