10 Incredible Musical Side Projects
5. Foxboro Hot Tubs
Coming off of the modern classic American Idiot, the pressure was on Green Day to write another fantastic release. In between sessions for what would become 21st Century Breakdown, the band decided to cut loose under a different alias: Foxboro Hot Tubs.
While the band had done something similar to this before American Idiot with another alias band (The Network), Foxboro Hot Tubs had a much different sound. As opposed to the Network's off-kilter new wave sound, these tracks sound like they are ripped straight out of the garage rock from the 1960's.
At this time in rock, garage rock was certainly nothing new, with the Black Keys and the White Stripes making their career out of the practice at that point. Foxboro Hot Tubs stuck out by writing hooks that were more pop-inclined rather than the typical bluesy material that could have been found on a White Stripes release.
The raw aggression was still there, but the songs owed their melodies more to Cheap Trick then say... Robert Johnson. For all the Green Day devotees, this project served as a great palette-cleanser while we all anticipated where the band were going next.
